Shrinklyy is a free PDF compressor at shrinklyy.site that runs entirely in your browser. You drop in a PDF, pick a size like 200 KB or 500 KB, and your own phone or computer builds a smaller version. The file never travels to a server, so there’s nothing stored on our end to worry about later.
It’s a different approach from the usual one where you upload a sensitive document, wait in a queue, and hope the site actually deletes it. Here there is no queue and no copy left behind: when you close the tab, the file data leaves with it.
It exists for those small but frustrating moments: the job portal that rejects anything over 200 KB, the email that bounces because your scan is 7 MB, the scholarship form that wants five PDFs under 500 KB each. Why compress?
Why PDFs end up too big
The text in a PDF weighs almost nothing. What makes the file heavy is usually hidden: photos saved at full camera resolution, the same font embedded twice, or leftover editing data. That’s why a scanned certificate that’s only two pages can be heavier than a ten-page typed report, and why the typed report shrinks so much more easily.
That upload keeps failing
You try to submit a form and get “File must be under 200 KB.” Your scan is 4 MB. Compressing is the only way the site will take it.
Email bounces
You send a contract and get a delivery failure a few minutes later. A PDF around 500 KB to 1 MB is far more likely to get through, especially to office inboxes.

How it works
What actually happens when you compress a PDF
A PDF isn’t a flat picture. It’s a container with images, fonts, and some invisible bookkeeping. Compression just squeezes the heavy parts and leaves the content you read untouched.
1. Images are re-saved more efficiently
Photos and scans are the heaviest part. Saving them at a more reasonable resolution and JPEG quality is where most of the saving comes from: often without any visible difference on screen or on a normal office print.
2. Only the fonts you used are kept
A PDF often contains a whole typeface even if you only typed a few letters. Keeping just the characters that actually appear in the document trims that overhead, and the text looks the same.
3. Hidden leftovers are cleaned out
Things you don’t see: old edits, duplicate images, hidden layers, thumbnail caches: get removed. This never changes how the pages look, but it can shave off a surprising amount from files that have been edited many times.
A scan isn’t really text: it’s a photo of text. That’s why a single certificate can be several megabytes while a typed ten-page report is much lighter. The three things that decide the size are resolution, whether it’s colour or grayscale, and how cleanly it was scanned. A common fix is to scan at a modest resolution in grayscale rather than high-resolution colour: it’s still sharp for reading and printing, but far lighter. It can if you push the size very low. Text usually stays crisp because we keep the fonts, but photos and scanned stamps soften first. At 500 KB most documents look the same. At 100 KB a colour scan will look softer. Preview at 150% zoom and stop at the largest size your portal allows: that keeps the most detail.
Use the 100 KB tool, but start from your original file, not a copy you’ve already compressed. If the PDF is a colour scan at high resolution, it may not reach 100 KB with clear text. In that case try rescanning that page in grayscale at 150–200 DPI, or use 200 KB if the form allows it.
Up to 50 MB. That limit is there because the work happens on your phone or computer: a 40 MB scan will take longer and use more memory than a 2 MB report. If a large file feels slow, try the 500 KB target first; it uses gentler settings and finishes a bit faster.

That’s actually where it saves the most. A text report might go from 4 MB to 600 KB; a single colour scan often drops even more because the images compress well. But there’s a limit: a heavy colour photo that must stay perfect may need a larger target like 300 KB or 500 KB instead of 100 KB.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and on Android/iOS. JavaScript needs to be on, which it is by default. If your browser is very old, update it first: the compression runs faster that way too.
Some PDFs are already as small as they can be: for example, a file exported with “Smallest file size” in Word, or a PDF that’s mostly tiny text with little image data. If Shrinklyy returns 215 KB when you asked for 200 KB, recompressing that same file won’t fix it. Start again from the original and allow a larger target, or split a long PDF into two parts if the portal permits.
